The Human experience

“One person by himself is not a complete human being…” (p.6)

This quote to me summarizes how our society today works. Northrop Frye is suggesting here that part of what makes us who we are is the way in which we interact with those around us. Without the influences of the people around us we would act differently, and it is how people interact together which forms our society.

  1. I think you are correct in saying that we are effected by those around us, but think you should have expanded a bit more on his views.

To me, Frye seems to be suggesting throughout the chapter that the way we learn (as well as act) is mainly through our society. He seems to be defining the term human as "a person who is part of a society" (a view akin to several socialists of the time). Besides that, I liked it.

  2. I agree. It takes 2 to create 1 (if that makes any sense what so ever). Without one of the parties, the other would fail to exist.

  3. Good quote to choose, I feel like this partially summerizes the whole first chapter. As he talks about our human race being a third level constructed of two levels of thinking into one. Basiclly the same idea as one person is not complete.
